What is an incarnation cross in Human Design?

Your incarnation cross is built from four gates: your Personality Sun and Earth, and your Design Sun and Earth. Together they describe the largest theme in your chart — the shape of the life you are here to live, rather than any single decision inside it.

The four gates

Two of the four come from the moment you were born: the Sun, and the Earth directly opposite it. The other two come from the Design calculation about three months earlier — the same Sun and Earth pair, taken from the unconscious side of the chart.

The Sun and Earth together carry roughly seventy percent of the imprinting in a Human Design chart, which is why these four positions, rather than the other thirty-odd activations, are what the cross is made from.

Right angle, left angle, juxtaposition

Crosses come in three angles, and the angle is decided by your profile. Right Angle crosses are a personal destiny — the life is largely worked out inside your own experience. Left Angle crosses are transpersonal — the life is worked out through other people, and the meetings are the mechanism. Juxtaposition crosses sit between the two, a fixed and singular fate.

Knowing which angle you carry answers a very old question: whether your life is supposed to come together through your own process, or through who you happen to meet.

How to hold an incarnation cross

The cross is the last thing to work with, not the first. It describes a theme that reveals itself over decades, and it becomes legible only when you have been living your Strategy and Authority long enough for the life to be genuinely yours.

Read too early, it becomes a story to perform. Read after the fact, it reads like a description of what was already happening.

Common questions

How is an incarnation cross calculated?

From four gates: the Personality Sun and Earth at your moment of birth, and the Design Sun and Earth taken about eighty-eight degrees of solar arc before it. Those four, in that order, name the cross.

What is the difference between a right angle and left angle cross?

A right angle cross describes a personal destiny worked out largely through your own experience. A left angle cross is transpersonal — it unfolds through other people and the meetings that find you. The angle follows from your profile.

Does the incarnation cross tell me my career?

No. It describes a theme, not a job title. Many different careers can express the same cross, and the cross becomes recognizable in hindsight rather than serving as an instruction.
