What are the Gene Keys?
The Gene Keys are 64 archetypes, one for each hexagram of the I Ching, developed by Richard Rudd. Each key is read at three frequencies — a Shadow, a Gift, and a Siddhi — and your birth chart places specific keys at specific points in a map called the Hologenetic Profile.
The same 64 gates, held differently
The Gene Keys use the same sixty-four gates as Human Design and the same birth calculation. The difference is what they are for. Human Design describes mechanics: how you decide, how you engage. The Gene Keys describe frequency: what a given theme looks like when you are contracted in it, when you are at ease in it, and when you have transcended it entirely.
That makes the Gene Keys a contemplative system rather than an analytical one. You are not meant to master them. You are meant to sit with one for a long time and let it work on you.
The three sequences of the Hologenetic Profile
The Hologenetic Profile unfolds in three sequences. The Activation Sequence holds your Life’s Work, Evolution, Radiance, and Purpose — the four spheres that describe your core genius and the friction that develops it. The Venus Sequence moves through Attraction, IQ, EQ, SQ, and Core, and it is the work of opening the heart. The Pearl Sequence — Vocation, Culture, Brand, and Pearl — is where the gift meets prosperity.
The Activation Sequence is drawn from the same four positions as the Human Design incarnation cross. The two systems are reading one chart from two altitudes.
Why the Gene Keys are worth the slowness
The system asks for contemplation, not consumption, and that is precisely its value. A Gene Key does not resolve in an afternoon. It shows up in an argument three weeks later, and you recognize the Shadow while you are standing in it, and that recognition is the whole mechanism.
Nothing in the Gene Keys diagnoses you. The Shadow is not a flaw to be removed — it is the compressed form of the same energy that becomes the Gift.
Common questions
Who created the Gene Keys?
Richard Rudd. The system builds on the I Ching and on Human Design, and reframes the sixty-four hexagrams as a spectrum of consciousness rather than a set of mechanics.
What is the difference between Gene Keys and Human Design?
They use the same birth calculation and the same sixty-four keys. Human Design describes the mechanics of how you operate — type, strategy, authority. The Gene Keys describe the frequency at which each theme is being lived, and are meant to be contemplated over years rather than analyzed.
What is a Hologenetic Profile?
The Gene Keys chart. It places specific keys at specific spheres across the Activation, Venus, and Pearl sequences, and is calculated from your exact birth date, time, and place.

What are the Shadow, Gift, and Siddhi in the Gene Keys?
Shadow, Gift, and Siddhi are the three frequencies of every Gene Key — the same energy contracted in fear, at ease in service, and dissolved into its highest expression.
What are the 64 gates in Human Design?
The 64 gates in Human Design are the chart positions that correspond to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, each carrying a specific theme and each divided into six lines.
What is an incarnation cross in Human Design?
Your incarnation cross is the four-gate combination of your Personality and Design Sun and Earth, describing the overall theme of your life purpose.
What is Human Design?
Human Design is a system that maps how your energy is built, calculated from your exact birth date, time, and place.
What are Human Design profile lines?
Your Human Design profile is a pair of numbers from one to six that describes the role you are here to play and how you learn.
