What are the 64 gates in Human Design?

The 64 gates are the individual themes in a Human Design chart, mapped one-to-one onto the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Each gate sits on one of the nine centers, each is divided into six lines, and the gates activated by the planets at your birth are the specific material your design is made of.

How the gates work

The zodiac is divided into sixty-four segments, one per hexagram. Wherever a planet sat at your birth, it activated the gate covering that degree — and the exact position within the gate gives one of six lines, which is where profile numbers come from.

Gates come in pairs. Two specific gates on two different centers form a channel, and a channel only switches on when both of its gates are activated. Thirty-six channels exist. Which of them are complete is what defines your centers, and therefore your type.

Hanging gates and the pull toward others

A gate activated without its partner is a hanging gate. It creates a genuine, physical attraction to people who carry the other half — meet them, and the channel completes between you, and something in you switches on that cannot switch on alone.

This is one of the more useful things Human Design explains: why certain people feel like they finish a sentence in you, and why some rooms make you capable of things you cannot do at home.

Where the gates lead: into the Gene Keys

The same sixty-four gates are the doorway into the Gene Keys. Where Human Design reads a gate as mechanics, the Gene Keys read it as a spectrum of consciousness — the same number, held as a Shadow, a Gift, and a Siddhi.

That is why the two systems sit so naturally together. One tells you how you are built. The other tells you what the building is for.

Common questions

How many gates are there in Human Design?

Sixty-four, matching the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching. Each gate belongs to one of the nine centers and is divided into six lines.

What is a channel in Human Design?

A channel is a connection between two centers, formed when both of its two gates are activated. There are thirty-six channels, and a completed channel is what defines the centers at either end of it.

What is a hanging gate?

A gate you have without the gate that would complete its channel. It creates an ongoing openness to whoever carries the other half, which is felt as attraction and as a real change in how you function around them.
