What are the nine centers in Human Design?

The nine centers in Human Design are the Head, Ajna, Throat, G, Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen, and Root. A center colored in is defined and works consistently; a center left white is open, and that is where you take in and amplify the people around you.

Defined and open centers

A defined center is switched on all the time. It is reliable, it is yours, and it is what you broadcast into every room you walk into. Whatever is defined in you is a fixed part of how you operate, from birth to death.

An open center has no fixed energy of its own. It takes in whatever is around it and amplifies it — which makes open centers the source of both your greatest wisdom and your deepest conditioning. You become wise in exactly the places you have spent a lifetime taking in other people’s versions.

What each center carries

Head — inspiration and mental pressure. Ajna — conceptualising and certainty. Throat — expression and manifestation. G — identity, love, and direction. Heart — willpower, worth, and the making of promises. Solar Plexus — emotion, and the wave. Sacral — life force, work, and sexuality. Spleen — instinct, intuition, health, and survival. Root — pressure, stress, and drive.

Your type and your authority both fall out of which of these are on. A defined Sacral makes a Generator. A defined Solar Plexus makes your authority emotional, whatever else is true.

Open centers and conditioning

The open centers are where most of the borrowed life is stored. An open Heart spends years trying to prove its worth. An open Root chases a stillness that never comes. An open Head takes on questions that were never its own to answer.

Nothing here needs fixing. An open center is not a wound — it is an aperture. The work is only ever to notice what is yours and what you picked up in the room.

Common questions

How many centers are there in Human Design?

Nine: Head, Ajna, Throat, G, Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen, and Root. Human Design uses nine rather than the seven of the classical chakra system.

Is it better to have more defined centers?

No. Definition brings consistency; openness brings receptivity and, over time, wisdom. Charts with a great deal of definition are more fixed, and charts with a great deal of openness are more permeable, and neither is an advantage.

What does an open center mean in Human Design?

It means that center has no consistent energy of its own and takes in what is around it, amplifying it. It is where you are most influenced by other people, and where you eventually become genuinely wise about that theme.
