What are Human Design profile lines?

Your Human Design profile is two numbers, like 3/5 or 1/3, drawn from the lines your conscious and unconscious Sun fall on. The first number is the part of the role you live consciously; the second is the part other people experience in you whether you intend it or not.

The six lines

Line 1, the Investigator: needs to know the foundation before it can move. Line 2, the Hermit: gifted naturally, called out of solitude by others. Line 3, the Martyr: learns by trial and error, and the errors are the method. Line 4, the Opportunist: everything comes through relationship and network. Line 5, the Heretic: projected upon, called on in crisis, holds a practical solution. Line 6, the Role Model: lives three distinct chapters and becomes a source of authority through what it has survived.

Every profile is a pairing of two of these, and the pairing is where the character lives. A 1/3 builds on a foundation it has personally stress-tested. A 4/6 moves through networks toward becoming someone worth trusting.

The conscious and unconscious lines

The first line comes from the Personality Sun — the calculation taken at the moment of your birth, and the part of yourself you would recognize in a description. The second comes from the Design Sun, calculated about three months before birth, and it is the part other people notice first.

That split explains a common experience: being consistently described by others in terms you would not have chosen for yourself. Both descriptions are true. One of them you can see.

Why the profile is worth knowing

Profile is where Human Design stops being mechanics and starts being a life. It tells you why your failures were not wasted if you are a 3, why the invitation matters if you are a 2, why the projection on you is not personal if you are a 5.

Because the profile is calculated from the Sun’s exact position, it is unusually sensitive to birth time — a guessed hour will often hand you the wrong one.

Common questions

What does a 3/5 profile mean in Human Design?

A 3/5 consciously learns by trial and error, and is unconsciously projected upon as someone who has the answer. The lived experience is discovering what does not work first-hand, and then being sought out for exactly that hard-won practicality.

How is a Human Design profile calculated?

From the line of the Personality Sun, taken at your moment of birth, and the line of the Design Sun, taken about eighty-eight degrees of solar arc earlier. Each gate has six lines, and those two line numbers make the profile.

Is one profile better than another?

No. Each of the twelve profiles describes a different way of moving through a life, and each of them has a form of authority the others cannot reach.
